Chapter 17
When I did get up, I went to the television and turned it on. I had no idea that it was news time. The six o’ clock news began, mentioning of a young man’s death. The Pearl Police Department had their Chief Tommy Lee talking about what evidence they had discovered.
I blasted the report as he spoke. “A body of a young man has been found in the trunk of his car here at the Wal-Mart in Pearl. It seems like he has been a victim of a homicide. His name will not be released until his family is notified. We have found evidence of foul play and will do a further investigation. Fingerprints have been discovered on the car. I’ll give you an update once everything is processed,” Chief Lee reported to the press as walked off as cameras tried to follow him back inside the police department.
“Damn. Damn. Damn!” I shouted.
“Jada, what’s up with you?” Roman spoke as he rushed down the hallway to see what was wrong with me in the living room.
I was so engrossed in the story I didn’t hear or see Roman come in. “They have found evidence in Jesse’s car. I bet they find our fingerprints.”
“Of course they’re going to find our fingerprints. They are going to find Mama’s, Daddy’s, and whoever else’s he had been riding around with. They will never suspect us because we are family,” Roman explained.
“You have a valuable point,” I replied as I scratched my head, sitting down in Daddy’s big brown recliner.
“It’s all good; nobody will know anything. Do you know that Jackson, Mississippi is number three in the United States for murder? There is no way we are going to get busted. We have to stay clean, wear our gloves, and be cool.”
“You are correct, Roman. Every time something pops off, we make it back to the scenes because Daddy is the Chief of Police. Everybody just sees us as the chief’s kids,” Roman continued to explain.
“You’re talking like you’ve been thinking about this for a minute,” I replied.
“Hell yeah. We have to cover our tracks from all angles. We can’t just go in this shit halfcocked,” he spoke.
We could not continue talking before the news flashed about the house fire on Lee Road. The news camera caught the house going up in flames and a couple of more houses were burned down in the process. The fire was burning out of control. They had to have fire departments from other counties to come in and stop the blaze.
“Shit, you were angry,” I spoke out.
“Angry isn’t the word I would use. Belligerent is more like it. That nigga really pissed me off when he said he snitched,” Roman says.
“Belligerent is a big word for you,” I joked.
“I see you have jokes.”
“Just a few,” I spoke as we continued to look at the news until 6:30 p.m.
My body was feeling very tired so I took a bath, got something to eat, then retired for bed. All these images of bodies were stuck my head.
